Abstract
<PICT:0837322/III/1> Apparatus for coating the outer surface of glass bottles or the like of predetermined size and having an open top comprises two spray guns arranged above and on opposite sides of a conveyer, each gun having an outlet arranged to direct a spray on to the bottles as they are carried in upright position by the conveyer, means for confining the spray from the guns to regions of the bottles below their open tops, and a valve member for each gun normally closing its outlet, control means being operatively associated with each valve member and with the conveyer to open the outlets of the guns simultaneously in response to the movement of a bottle or bottles into a position adjacent to the spraying device. As shown, conveyer 20 carries bottles 24 past spraying apparatus 26. This comprises two spray guns 30, each mounted on a rod 60 so as to point downwards at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizontal on to the shoulders of the bottle. These rods are adjustable vertically by means of rollers 62 and set-screws to accommodate bottles of different sizes. Each spray gun has a nozzle 48, and is supplied with coating material through conduit 36 and compressed-air for spraying through conduit 46. Nozzle 48 is kept normally closed by a spring-loaded plunger inside the gun. The other end of this plunger is attached to a piston moving in a cylinder at the rear end of the gun. The space on one side of the piston is vented to atmosphere, that on the other side is connected through conduit 56 and valve 88 with the compressed-air supply. A feeler 86 is spring-loaded and is arranged so that when a bottle is in the position shown it is deflected to close the switch 941 in an electrical circuit which energizes solenoid 91 and so opens valve 88 to admit compressed-air to the cylinder at the rear of the gun and so open the nozzle 48 and permit spraying to begin. When a bottle is not present, arm 86 swings outwards, switch 941 opens and spraying stops. Shields may be arranged to further protect against entry of material into the bottles.
