Abstract

835,484. Draught excluders. GOODRICH CO., B. F. Nov. 11, 1957, No. 35062/57. Class 20(3) [Also in Group XIII] A sealing strip comprises a thin-walled hollow body 10 which is made of a resilient elastic material, e.g. polyvinylchloride, and is defined by walls 11, 12 which diverge transversely from a common wall 13 and are joined along their outer edges by an integral re-entrant V-shaped portion 14, the walls of which are preferably of less thickness than the walls 11, 12. The strip is preferably cut to extend completely around the opening to be closed, the meeting ends preferably being joined e.g. by heat sealing. The hollow body 10 is easily compressed due to the bellows action of the V-portion 14, the action being aided by providing a longitudinally extending groove 16 which acts as a pivot in the region of the wall 13. An initial contact lip 17 is provided on the outer edge of the wall 11. The strip can be secured by cementing the outer face of the wall 12 to the sheet metal covering 25 of an insulated refrigerator door 23. The strip, however, is preferably provided with a flange 18 which has ribs 21 on its outer surface and a flange 22 along its inner edge and which is joined to the hollow body 10 by an integral hollow wall portion 19. The flange 18 is secured to the sheet metal covering 23 by means of a plate 27 and screws 28. In a modification the portion 14 has two re-entrant portions and is of approximate W-shape in cross-section. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the attachment flange 34 has edge flanges 41, 42 and the outer wall 36 has two contact flanges 39, 40, and a longitudinal groove 38 opposite the apex of the re-entrant portion 37. The attachment portion 18 of the strip may be notched to facilitate disposal in an arcuate configuration.
