Abstract

[Also in Group XXXV] In electric arc stud welding equipment in which a solenoid retracts a stud from a workpiece to strike a pilot arc the current in which is limited by a series impedance subsequently short-circuited by a main contactor to apply the full welding current, the main contactor is energized either directly or indirectly by the voltage set up across the pilot arc. Operation of a push-button PB, Fig. 1, energizes the solenoid 11 to retract the stud 1 and connects the stud 1 and the workpiece 2 across the supply 3, 4 in series with the impedance 17 to strike the pilot arc. The main contactor MC whose coil 20 is connected between the stud 1 and the workpiece 2 operates to short-circuit the impedance 17 and to disconnect a relay R. After a delay due to condenser C, relay R falls back to disconnect the solenoid 11, whereupon the stud 1 is welded to the workpiece 2 and the collapse of the welding arc de-energizes the coil 20. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) operation of the push button PB energizes a relay only if the stud is engaging the workpiece. This relay energizes the solenoid and connects the coil of the main contactor between the stud and the workpiece. A pneumatic timer is used. In a further modification, actuation of the push button PB, Fig. 3, brings up a relay S if the stud 1 is contacting the workpiece 2 and energizes one coil 50 of the solenoid to retract the stud 1, the coil 50 also acting as the limiting impedance. Relay S short-circuits contacts 54, 55 of the push button PB. When the push button PB is released, the pilot arc voltage energizes a relay T to connect up the coil 20 of the main contactor MC which short-circuits the coil 50 to apply full welding current and places the second coil 51 of the solenoid in circuit. After a delay a pneumatic timer actuates contacts 62, 60, contact 62 short-circuits the solenoid coil 51 to make the weld and contact 60 disconnects relay T which slowly releases to deenergize the main contactor coil 20 even if the stud has stuck in the retracted position.
