Abstract

822,085. Stuffing-box substitutes. PIONEER OILSEALING & MOULDING CO. Ltd. April 21, 1958 [April 25, 1957], No. 13145/57. Class 122 (5). A seal for a shaft bearing 12 comprises a member of synthetic rubber comprising an outer cylindrical limb 15 adapted to fit in the bearing housing 13 and connected by a radial flange 16 to an inner cylindrical limb 14 having on its internal surface spaced sealing lips 14a adapted to engage the shaft 11 and a number of grooves 14b, 14c and ridges 14d, the outer limb and radial flange being reinforced with metal. The reinforcement may be an L-section metal ring 17 which may be embedded in the rubber as in Fig. 1 or act as a facing 27 as in Fig. 2. A seal may be arranged on each side of the bearing.
