Abstract
Hydrogen cyanide is produced by passing a mixture of methane, ethane, propane or butane and ammonia at a temperature of ca. 900-1400 DEG C., preferably 1100-1250 DEG C., through an annular reaction chamber formed by two concentric tubes at least one of which is provided with a heated catalyst surface in contact with the gas mixture at a velocity of 25-200 m./sec., the dimensions of the chamber and the extent of heating thereof being such that (a) the cross-sectional area of the chamber is at least 2 sq. cm., (b) the maximum distance of the gas molecules from the nearest part of the heated catalyst surface is 1.5-10 mm., preferably 3-5 mm., (c) the ratio of cross-sectional area to heated catalyst surface is 1 : 200-800, (d) the length of heated surface is 60-300 cm., and (e) the contact time of the gas with the heated catalyst surface is 0.02-0.06 sec. Mixtures of the hydrocarbons specified or natural gas may be used instead of a single hydrocarbon. When using methane the ratio of ammonia to methane may be 1 : 0.85-1.1. The tube may be of sillimanite or chrome-nickel steel. The catalyst may be platinum-ruthenium, platinumrhodium, platinum - iridium - rhodium or platinum-palladium-rhodium. Electric heating elements may be arranged outside the outer tube or both outside the outer tube and inside the inner tube. A number of tubes may be arranged in parallel.
