Abstract

Unsymmetrical carbocyanine dyes of the general formula <FORM:0812924/IV (c)/1> wherein R and R1 are substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aralkyl groups, R2 is an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or aryl group, V is an aryl group, n and n1 are 1 or 2 and X represents an anion, are prepared by reacting a quaternary salt of a chloro-substituted 2-methylbenzimidazole with a phenyl-substituted benzoxazole base carrying a 2-(o -anilformyl methylene) group. Examples are given of the preparation of dyes wherein n is 2, n1 is 1, V is phenyl and R1 is ethyl, and wherein R is p-carboxybenzyl and R2 is ethyl, or wherein R is ethyl and R2 is b -hydroxyethyl.
