Abstract

811,002. Twisting and winding yarns. DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORPORATION. March 22, 1955 [March 22, 1954; April 20, 1954], No. 8380/55. Class 120(2) An inflow twister comprises a rotatable spindle and stationary yarn take-up mechanism mounted in the spindle and including a traverse mechanism and a rotatable mandrel for a removable yarn package core, the mandrel and traverse mechanism being driven from the spindle through a limited torque coupling, with the traverse mechanism so connected to the mandrel as to be driven at predetermined rate relative to the mandrel. The twister is preferably employed for twisting together several yarns from packages mounted on a separate creel that carries eyelets 743, Fig. 12, tension devices 747, which may be of the twin disc type, and a combining roller guide 749. Carried on the frame of the twister is a multiple eyelet separator guide 751 and a compression trumpet 755 through which the yarns pass to the twisting spindle 421 which is carried in bearing 419. The yarns pass first through an axial bore 437, Fig. 13, in the spindle 421 communicating through orifice 439 with a yarn storage device 433, 435 formed of two merging eccentric surfaces. From the yarn storage device, the combined yarns balloon over a cup-shaped guide 429 to an apex guide 539 rotatably mounted on a tubular support 541 through which the yarns extend to a pulley 545 and a pigtail guide, not shown, before being passed around two capstan pulleys 525, 535, Fig. 12. For a given spindle speed, the amount of twist imparted with depend upon the rate of advance of the yarns by the capstan pulleys 525, 535 and changes in the gears driving these pulleys may be utilized to provide alterations in twist. Yarns leaving capstan pulley 535 pass over a fixed pulley to pulley 705 carried by a movable rider member 707 slidable on a bar 709 and forming part of a yarn compensator device for maintaining a constant tension. A coil spring 711 tensions the yarns as they pass over the pulley 705 towards fixed pulleys 713, 715, 717 to movable pulleys 719, 721, 723, the two latter of which move with the guide arm 591 while the pulley 719 is reciprocated over a half of the distance traversed by traverse arm 591. The arm 591 is reciprocated by a grooved cam 617 driven through differential gearing and clutch mechanism 503 to give a continous displacement of adjacent turns of yarn wound on the package. A core 479 on which the yarn package is built is mounted on mandrel 473 carried by anti-friction bearings on an axle 467. The core 479 is secured upon the mandrel by a screwed, flanged cap 477 that is removable for doffing. To prevent rotation during doffing of the mandrel 473, teeth 487 on a pivoted block may be engaged with a gear 475 secured to the mandrel 473. 'Gear 475 normally transmits drive from a gear 505 driven through a slip coupling from a gear 501, in turn driven through change gearing from the spindle 421. The main drive to the spindle 421 is through V-belts from a motor 423 to adjustable split pulleys 427 capable of varying the spindle speed. The capstan pulleys, take-up mechanism and associated gearing are mounted on a frame carried by the spindle 421 on bearings 443. Because the frame has a low centre of gravity it does not rotate. If the frame should inadvertently begin to rotate, trip levers actuate a safety switch to cut off energy to the driving motor. To facilitate doffing, the apex guide 539 and tube 541 are mounted on a tubular frame 551 that may be pivoted clear of the end of the mandrel 473. A cage-like guard 761 prevents operators from being struck by ballooning yarns and also limits the outward throw of the balloon. The conical front of the guard is removable for doffing. In a modified form, Fig. 22, the take-up mechanism is mounted to remain stationary within a rotating cup-shaped support 789 having a spiral cam 787 having a cam surface wherewith co-operates a roller 785 carried by a slidable block 779 to which traverse arm 591 is hinged. A further cam block 799 coacts with a further surface on the cam 787 having one half of the pitch of the first surface and reciprocates a pulley 803 of a yarn compensationg device. Spring-urged rollers 767, 769 press upon the ends of the growing yarn package, as in Fig. 13 also. In a further embodiment, the yarn package is frictianally driven by a drum urged in to contact with it by springs but capable of being pivoted and held completely clear of the package for doffing. In this construction, the core 52, Fig. 4, and yarn package are driven from the drum 66 which is covered with resilient material, such as rubber, and is driven from a gear 90 through a friction clutch that transmits a variable drive to reduce the yarn tension during building of the package. Springs 74 urge the drum 66 into oontact with the package and the gear train for transmitting rotation to the drum 66 from the spindle 18 is mounted to maintain the drive throughout the arcuate motion of the drum as the package is built. The core 52 is carried on a freely-rotatable mandrel 46 which is provided with a gear 48 that drives the traverse mechanism through planetary gears, Fig. 6. From the gear 48, drive is carried through an idler gear 164 to a gear 176 freely mounted on a fixed shaft 182 and supporting a cover plate 188 enclosing a ring gear 186 that drives, through an idler 170 and a gear 174, a traverse cam 158. The internal teeth of the ring gear 186 mesh with a pinion 202 driven from the cover plate 188 through reduction gearing so that, for each revolution of the gear 176, the ring gear 186 will be advanced or retarded (according to the gear ratios) a slight amount relative to the gear 176, thus providing a displacement of adjacent turns of yarn laid upon the package. Specifications 773,891 and 811,001 are referred to.
