Abstract

803,959. Fluid pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE AIR BRAKE CO. Sept. 17, 1956, No. 28336/56. Class 103 (1). A composite railway braking equipment having both a compressed fluid system operative to cause a brake application on the reduction of pressure in a brake pipe 19, and a vacuum braking system operative to cause a brake application on the reduction of vacuum in a train pipe 38, includes a vacuum control valve device 4 operable in response to a reduction in brake pipe pressure to reduce the degree of vacuum in the train pipe 19 to a corresponding extent and having movable pressure-sensitive means, such as a diaphragm 39, subject both to the pressure in the brake pipe 19 and to the vacuum in the train pipe 38 to move the means 39 in opposite directions. A reference pressure also acts in chamber 64 upon a pressure-sensitive movable means in the valve device 4, such reference pressure being derived from a volume reservoir 66 supplied through a double check valve 65 by a regulating valve 5 which is adjusted to supply pressure fluid at a value lower than that to which the brake pipe is normally changed. Movement in one direction of the pressure-sensitive means within the valve means 4 operates to establish, through a vacuum release valve device 6, a connection between the train pipe 38 and source of vacuum by way of pipe 99, and movement in the other direction to severe such connection and open the train pipe to atmosphere. The system shown also includes the usual distributing valve device 1, brake cylinder 2, driver's brake valve device 3, quick release control valve device 7, suppression valve device 8, protection valve device 9, and safety control valve in the form of a diaphragm foot valve 10.
