Abstract

A textile sizing composition comprises an aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt of an interpolymer of a 1.3-diene and acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid, the interpolymer containing at least 25 mol. per cent of the diene. The interpolymer may also contain up to 50 mol. per cent of an additional olefinic monomer. The diene may be butadiene, isoprene, piperylene or 2.3-dimethyl butadiene. The additional component may be styrene, vinyl toluene, ortho- or para-chlorostyrene, alpha-methyl styrene, methyl-, ethyl- or 2-ethyl-hexyl-acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylamide or acrylonitrile. The salt-forming base may be an alkali metal, ammonium, mono-, di- or tri-methylamine, mono-, di- or tri-ethylamine, isopropylamine, ethanolamine, butylamine, morpholine or pyridine. The solution may have a pH of 7 to 10 due to an excess of the base and may also contain glycerine, ethylene glycol, sorbitol, propylene glycol, a polyethylene glycol, a polyglycerol, or a polypropylene glycol, a sulphonated animal, mineral or vegetable oil or mixture of such an oil with the unsulphonated oil or Twitchell oil, and an anionic or non-ionic wetting agent, of which a number are specified.ALSO:Warp yarns of terephthalic acid linear polyesters are sized with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt of an interpolymer of a conjugated 1.3-diene and acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, the interpolymer containing at least 25 mol. per cent of the diene. The interpolymer may also contain up to 50 mol. per cent of an additional olefinic monomer. The diene may be butadiene, isoprene, piperylene or 2.3-dimethyl butadiene. The additional component may be styrene, vinyl toluene, ortho-chlorostyrene, para - chlorostyrene, alpha - methylstyrene, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, methylmethacrylate, acrylamide or acrylonitrile. The salt-forming base may be an alkali metal, ammonium, mono-, di- and tri-methylamine, mono-, di- and tri-ethylamine, isopropylamine, ethanolamine, butylamine, morpholine or pyridine. The sizing solution may have a pH of 7 to 10 obtained by the presence of an excess of the base, and may also contain glycerine, ethylene glycol, sorbitol, propylene glycol, a polyethylene glycol, a polyglycerol or a polypropylene glycol, a sulphonated animal, mineral or vegetable oil or mixture of such an oil with the unsulphonated oil or Twitchell oil, and an anionic or non-ionic wetting agent, of which a number are specified. The sized yarns may be dried at 140 DEG to 250 DEG F. and the size may be removed after the textile operations by scouring or mild soaping. The yarn may be composed of polyethylene terephthalate or esters of terephthalic acid with polymethylene glycols having 2 to 10 carbon atoms in the molecule or such esters which are modified by including in the chain other glycols or dibasic acids. U.S.A. Specifications 2,465,319 and 2,663,612 are referred to.
