Abstract
The invention comprises 3-cyanophenthiazine and its preparation by reacting 3-chlorophenthiazine with cuprous cyanide in boiling quinoline. In an example: 3-chlorophenthiazine, powdered cuprous cyanide, copper powder and iodine are refluxed in quinoline for 48 hours, poured into dilute sulphuric acid and the precipitate obtained extracted with di-isopropyl ether yielding 3-cyanophenthiazine; a further yield is obtained by treatment of insoluble material with boiling aqueous KCN and then re-extracting with di-isopropyl ether.
