Abstract

The solubility of a cold-water soluble cellulose ether is improved, and its bulk density is increased, by forming a mixture of 2-35 per cent by weight of a fibrous cold-water soluble cellulose ether and 98-65 per cent of hot water at a temperature above the gel point of the cellulose ether, cooling the mixture to a temperature below its gel point until the fibrous structure has substantially disappeared and the mass has become transparent, heating the mass to above its syneresis temperature, drying it without allowing the temperature to drop below the gel point, and then reducing the dried product to the desired particle size. The treatment with hot water may be carried out at super-atmospheric pressure. The greatest possible amount of the water separated from the mass by syneresis is preferably removed by decanting, centrifuging or other mechanical methods before drying is started. Ethers specified are methyl cellulose, certain ethyl celluloses and methylhydroxy propyl cellulose. U.S.A. Specification 2,331,864 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 790,223.
