Abstract

798,561. Respiratory appliances. LEE, A. ST. J. Dec. 12, 1955 [Jan. 27, 1955], No. 35613/55. Class 81 (2). In order to relate the concentration of a substance supplied to a patient to the body condition, e.g. the carbon dioxide or anaesthetic content, samples of exhaled air are taken and the resultant measurement controls the supply of the substance. In the forced respiration apparatus shown in Fig. 1, oxygen and nitrous oxide through pipes 21, 20 respectively, are mixed at 24 and passed through a variable pressure regulator 30 to a manifold 10 in which a valve 50 is moved between seatings 11 and 13, to provide the respiration cycle. The valve is moved by air pressure admitted to a cylinder 60 under the control of a timing mechanism driven by a constant speed motor. When the valve 50 is against its upper seating 13 the gas mixture passes through the endotracheal tube 14 to the patient and when it is against the lower seating 11 the lungs are vented to atmosphere. A collapsible tube 44 in a closed chamber 45 is normally compressed by air admitted through pipe 85b, but the timing means causes the pressure to be released for a short interval at the end of each exhalation so that through oneway valves 46, 47 a sample of the air is sucked into tube 44 and passed to the CO2 analyser 42. This device gives a signal voltage, the magnitude of which depends on the proportion of CO2 present and this is compared in a circuit 120 with adjustable standard voltage obtained from source 109 to control servomotor 122 and adjust the pressure regulator 30 as necessary. In an application of the invention to an anaesthetic appliance (see Fig. 3, not shown), a gas analyser for determining the proportion of anaesthetic in the exhaled air is connected permanently in the breathing circuit but its output is only made effective to control the supply of gas through servomotors by a pressure-sensitive switch which responds to the change from exhalation to inhalation.
