In a body or cartridge containing a treatment medium through which a fluid to be treated can be caused to flow, the medium is held in the body under compression by resilient means comprising a compressed pervious and resilient medium or a flexible member to which fluid pressure is applied. In a cylindrical container 13, Fig. 1, pressure fluid entering by a side port 24 acts on the exterior of a flexible sleeve 23 secured at its ends to the container and enclosing the treatment medium. A movable gauze 27 responding indirectly to the fluid pressure may provide a separate chamber 28 for a medium which indicates when the medium in the sleeve 23 is approaching exhaustion. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the medium is contained in a bellows 38 open at its ends through gauze partitions 34, 39 to the outlet and inlet ports 31, 32 of the cylinder 29. The supporting member 33 for the inlet end of the bellows is formed with ports 41 through which the untreated water has access to the outside of the bellows to maintain therearound the inlet pressure of the water, this pressure being higher than the mean pressure inside the bellows. In another form, resilient pads of sponge rubber or a material sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Sorboprene " may sandwich the treatment medium between them.
