Abstract

A method of decontaminating radioactive waste acidic solutions containing plutonium comprises passing the acid solution at a pH of at least 1 through a column of cation exchange resin containing a bivalent ion to change the valence state of the plutonium and cause it to be absorbed by the resin. In an example the resin is first treated with a solution of a ferrous salt (e.g., sulphate, nitrate, chloride or sulphamate) to convert it from the H+ or Na+ to the FeII form, and the radioactive solution is thereafter passed through it. Preferably the treated solution is further decontaminated by passing it through a column of normal cation exchange resin.
