Abstract
Copolymers of allyl glycidyl ether with at least one acrylate of the general formula CH2=C(R)COOR1, where R is hydrogen or methyl and R1 is an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical, are prepared by polymerization through the unsaturated bonds of the ether and ester, in the presence of a chain stopping agent such as turpentine, phellandrene, chloroform, bromobenzene and carbon tetrachloride. The acrylate may be methyl, ethyl, propyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, b -ethoxy-ethyl, nonyl, lauryl or cyclohexyl acrylate or methacrylate. Polymerization may be effected by adding the acrylate and chain-stopping agent in equal portions over a period of ten hours to refluxing allyl glycidyl ether through which air is blown. The copolymer may be esterified with a drying oil acid such as those obtained by the saponification of linseed, dehydrated castor, soya bean, tung, oiticica, perilla, tobacco seed, sunflower or marine animal oil, and the resulting esters may be used as filmforming vehicles in coating compositions.
