An apparatus for dispensing measured quantities of liquid such as upper cylinder lubricant comprises a piston 6 working in cylinder 1, the piston rod 7 being formed with a duct 20. On pressing the piston rod by hand, liquid is discharged through passage 15 past non-return valve 19, of nozzle 18 the duct 20 allowing atmospheric air to enter the cylinder 1 above the piston 6. The piston is returned under the action of spring 10 and liquid is drawn from the container through pipe 13, past non-return valve 14 into the cylinder. The duct 20 allows the air above the piston to escape until the duct is closed by the end cap 8 when the small amount of air trapped above the piston 6 acts as a cushion whereby the piston is arrested smoothly and progressively. Alternatively, the duct 20 may be formed as an axial passage in rod 7 communicating at its upper and lower ends with transverse passages to operate as above. The member 2 is adapted to fit directly to the liquid container. The end delivery nozzle 18 is inserted in a socket 21, when not in use, which communicates with the interior of the container to allow for the priming of the pump. The cylinder 1 may be made of a transparent material. The pump unit may be mounted horizontally across the liquid container outlet and constitute a carry handle for the apparatus, in this case the delivery nozzle is mounted directly on the end of the pump cylinder.
