Abstract

794,823. Electric tests. COLMAN, H., and FOWLER, R. L. Nov. 19, 1954 [Dec. 4, 1953; April 30, 1954; Oct. 5, 1954], No. 33529/54. Class 37: Apparatus for determining the presence of water in a petrol tank comprises a verticallysupported sensing head located a fixed distance from the bottom of the tank and forming one electrode of a capacitor wherein a change in dielectric from petrol to water produces sufficient change in capacitance to operate an electronic relay circuit to indicate the presence of the water. As shown, Fig. 2, the test electrode comprises a disc 18 held in the probe head 21 by insulating material 23, and spaced from the bottom of the tank 11 by lugs 22, A cable 19, mechanically shielded by a copper tube 24, connects electrode 18 through a manhole cover 28 in the top of the tank 11 to one input terminal 16 of the relay circuit (Fig. 3), the other, earthed input terminal 15, being connected to the tank itself or to a metal plate located at the bottom of the tank below the electrode 18. The presence of water 35 between the test electrodes causes a relay 37 to operate an indicator, and a pump may be energized to eject the water. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, a ring-shaped test electrode is supported by a bracket 49 carrying a pump which is manually operated when the presence of water is indicated. In a further embodiment, two spaced, insulated electrodes are located in the probe head 21 to detect water 'in suspension in a tank, or in a feed pipe. Specifications 645,732 and 697,253 are referred to.
