Abstract
782,922. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Dec. 6, 1955 [Dec. 13, 1954], No. 36075/54. Class 39(4). A restraint for keeping the moderator structure of a nuclear reactor stable whilst allowing for dimensional changes in the lifetime of the reactor comprises a series of elastic bands around the structure, each band comprising a series of joined links and each link comprising a nest of coaxial tubes, the tubes in each nest being end-loaded one against the other so that alternate tubes accept equal tensile and compressive loads respectively, couplings between adjacent links from the innermost tube at one link to the outermost tube of the adjacent link, and means for transmitting the tensions in the bands as a centrifugal load to the walls of the moderator structure. Referring to Fig. 1, the moderator structure 10 is in the form of a twenty-four sided prism constructed of blocks arranged in layers. Each layer is restrained from radial expansion by an elastic band comprising twenty-four links 12 with pin joints 14 between the links. The joints 14 are held by a bracket welded to angle section restraint beams 16, Fig. 3a, which press against the walls of the structure. The restraint beam 16 of the bottom layer is provided with twenty-four extensions 19 which are bolted to a grid 26 which is maintained coaxial with the surrounding pressure vessel 17 so that both radial and sideways movement of the moderator structure is prevented whilst radial growth is permitted. Fig. 4 shows the construction of one of the links 12 which comprises nests of tubes 28, 29, the tubes 28 being in compression between the ends 30 of tubes 29 which are in tension. At one end an end-piece 32 is welded to the end piece of the outermost tube, whilst at the other end a tie bar 35 is threaded to accommodate a bush 34 which is located in a forked end 37. For the intermediate restraint bands the tubes 28, 29 and the tie bar 35 are of mild steel, and for the top and bottom bands the tubes 28 are of stainless steel. Fig. 6 shows how the graphite moderator and reflector structure is built up. In the moderator part, vertical graphite blocks with central fuel element channels are spaced apart to allow for growth by two layers of tiles 47, 48 ; the tiles 47 have their " North/South " faces in contact and their " East /West " faces spaced apart and the tiles 48 have the reverse arrangement. The blocks of the reflector part 10b are not spaced apart as the radiation is not sufficient to cause appreciable growth in them.
