Abstract
A bacteriostatic water-based polish, contains a water-soluble germicidal dithiocarbamate; this may be of the formula R1R2NCSSR3, where R1 and R2 are each hydrogen or an organic group, e.g. an alkyl group containing from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or form a cyclic organic group with the nitrogen, and R3 is ammonium, an amine salt group, e.g. ethylamino-, or a metal, e.g. an alkali metal. Sodium and potassium dimethyl dithiocarbamates are particularly effective, and may be employed in proportions of from 0.5 to 3 per cent by weight. The dithiocarbamates may be incorporated in the polishes by dissolving in an aqueous component which is subsequently blended with other components thereof, or an aqueous solution of the dithiocarbamate may be mixed with a made-up polish. Tests of the bacteriostatic efficiency of the compositions are described.
