Abstract

Titanium base alloys having compositions within one of the following ranges in per cent by weight. Al 2.0-8.0, Si 0.1-1.5, V 2.0-6.0 or Mo 1.0-6.0 or Mo and V 1.0-6.0; Al 4.0-6.0, Si 0.3-0.5, V 3.0-5.0; Al 4.0-6.0, Si 0.3-0.5, Mo 3.0-4.0; Al 2.0-8.0, Mo 1.0-6.0 the remainder in each case being Ti together with impurities O up to 0.2, N up to 0.1, C up to 0.25 and H up to 0.02, the Al content being at least as great as that of Mo or V or the combination thereof, are heated to a temperature high in the polyphase field to coarsen the microstructure and to form a continuous alpha phase, then quickly cooled and aged at a temperature below the coarsening temperature till the beta phase is dark etching. The final condition of the beta phase is determined by etching with a solution of 60 cc. glycerine, 20 cc. concentrated nitric acid and 20 cc. precipitated hydrofluoric acid. The coarsening treatment may be at 1500-1650 DEG F. for 4-24 hours, the alloy being rapidly cooled in inert atmosphere or air or by quenching to room temperature or to the ageing temperature of 1000-1200 DEG F. at which it is held e.g. for 4-48 hours.
