Abstract

780,369. Cigarettes and cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Sept. 6, 1955 [March 30, 1955], No. 25504/55. Addition to 737,779. Class 130. Cigarettes C, Fig. 5, having a loosely packed core 108 to their central filler portion are formed by temporarily inserting into the ends of a double-length cigarette rod held in clamps 72, 74, Fig. 1, stepped plungers 78, at least the leading steps of which taper rearwardly, and then severing the rod with a knife 104. The plungers 78 also densify the central rod portion to give the cigarettes C dense lighting ends, and may leave spaces for the insertion of filter plugs 106, hollow tubes, additional filler material or the leading ends, later severed, of filter ropes. The plungers 78 have spring-loaded collars 88 which seat in the rod wrapper ends during plunger insertion. Sets of clamps 72, 74 may be mounted along the periphery of a rotating turret. In Fig. 8 (not shown) the plungers have each nine tapering steps backed by a cylindrical step.
