Abstract

784,259. Pistons; connecting-rods. KRUPP MOTORENUND KRAFTWAGENFABRIKEN GES., F., [formerly SUDWERKE MOTORENUND KRAFTWAGENFABRIKEN GES.]. Aug. 2, 1955 [Aug. 3, 1954], No. 22182/55. Class 122 (1). [Also in Group XXVII] In a reciprocating engine, particularly a twostroke internal combustion engine, the piston 4 is connected to its connecting rod 2 so that it is rotatable about its own axis which is offset in relation to the longitudinal axis of the rod, as by an amount e, Fig. 2, whereby, in operation, the horizontal component P of the connecting rod thrust applies a torque Pe about the piston axis which, if arranged to exceed the frictional resistance, causes either rotation or oscillation of the piston in its cylinder. The ball end 1 of the connecting rod 2 is arranged in a two-part cup 3 eccentrically mounted in a rotatable socket 5, the cup and socket being retained in position by a supporting ring 11 secured by a lock-nut 12. Ball thrust bearings may be arranged between the ends of the socket and the piston. The eccentric mounting of the piston may also be obtained by offsetting the longitudinal axis of the piston in relation to that of the socket 5 which latter may also be offset in relation to the connecting-rod axis. The piston is cooled by fluid supplied through the connecting rod and circulated via discharge passage 8, chamber 6, ducts 9, chamber 7 and outlet ducts 10, the ducts 9 and 10 being dimensioned in relation to each other and the passage 8 so that chambers 6 and 7 are always completely filled. The invention may be applied to a piston connected to its connecting rod by a gudgeon-pin housed in a rotatable socket. The rotational movement of the piston may be used for controlling purposes.
