Abstract

773,657. Silencers for gaseous currents. NEMEC, J. Nov. 11, 1955 [June 9, 1955], No. 32310/55. Class 7 (2). An exhaust or intake silencer comprises inner and outer coaxial casings 1, 6 defining an annular passageway 9, the inner and shorter casing 6 being closed at both ends thereof by walls 7, 8, and provided with at least one aperture 11, and forming with the casing 1 chambers 12, 14. The casing 1 has inlet and outlet openings 4, 5. As shown, a helically wound strip 16 is disposed in the passageway to form a helical gas passage between the chambers 12, 14; alternatively two such strips may be provided to form parallel helical passages. The resonator chamber 13 formed by the casing 6 and the chambers 12, 14 are approximately equal in volume, the maximum difference in volume being 15 per cent. The aperture 11, or apertures, have a crosssectional area substantially equal to that of the helical passage, and are located at about twofifths of the length of that passage from the inlet thereof. The tail-pipe 15 may be omitted, in which case the volume of the chamber 14 is less than that of the chambers 12, 13.
