Abstract
774,499. Turbine and compressor blades. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Sept. 17, 1954 [June 19, 1953], No. 17092/53. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XII] An element for use in turbines or compressors, for example a turbine or compressor rotor or stator blade, comprises walls which envelop a layer or insert of corrugated material, wires extending longitudinally along the troughs of the corrugations. The turbine blade in Figs. 1 and 1a comprises a corrugated insert 1 of heatresistant sheet metal wires 4 (see Figs. 3, 3a), being disposed in the troughs of the corrugations, and the crests of the corrugations are bonded to the walls of the blade. The insert shown in Figs. 4, 4a is formed of a number of corrugated metal strips 5, 6 with interwoven wires 4. In Fig. 2 the insert is cut so that coolant air entering at the root end of the blade reverses in direction twice before issuing at the blade tip and trailing edge. Various patterns of cooling air flow may be obtained by varying the shape and direction of the corrugated inserts. In Fig. 7, for example, corrugated units 6, 6a are so disposed as to give the airflow indicated by the arrows. Spacers such as 16 in Fig. 11a may be disposed between corrugated inserts and a deflecting beading 17 is formed on the spacer to guide the outflowing air. The spacer and concave and convex blade surfaces may be so bent as to direct the coolant air discharge in a direction opposed to that of the blade rotation. The spacers may be built up of wrapped sheet as in Fig. 19 and may have passages therethrough for cooling air flow.
