Abstract

The invention comprises substituted phenols of the general formula <FORM:0762720/IV(b)/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or a methyl group, and acid addition salts thereof, and the preparation thereof by reacting morpholine or 3-methylmorpholine, or an acid addition salt of either, with 3,4-dimethylphenol in the presence of formaldehyde and, if desired, treating the product with an acid. The process may be modified in that the N-ethoxymethyl-derivative of morpholine or 3-methylonorpholine, or an acid addition salt thereof, may be used in the above process whereupon the presence of formaldehyde is not necessary. The reaction may be carried out in an inert solvent, e.g. ethanol or isopropanol. In the examples : 2-[31-methyl - morpholino - (41) - methyl] - 4,5 - dimethylphenol and the hydrochloride and maleate salts thereof, and 2-morpholinomethyl-4,5-dimethyl-phenol and the hydrochloride salt thereof are prepared.
