Abstract

Thermoplastic synthetic polymer graft coatings on films, sheets, rods, tubes and other articles made of a chemically different thermoplastic synthetic polymer are made by polymerizing in the vapour phase, in the presence of the article and a polymerization catalyst, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer excluding any ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon. Monomers mentioned are tetrafluoroethylene and methyl methacrylate. The article may be made of polyethylene or a superpolyamide. During the polymerization a small amount of water and also a dispersing agent, e.g. ammonium perfluorocarboxylate, may be present. The catalyst may be ammonium persulphate or benzoin, and the polymerization may be assisted by ultraviolet light.
