Abstract

A tobacco smoke filter comprises synthetic fibres, e.g. nylon, cellulose acetate, viscose rayon and polyester fibre, having diameters of 0,1 to 2,0 microns, mixed with a greater quantity of carrier fibres of substantially larger diameter e.g. cotton, rayon, wool, or nylon fibres with diameters of 10,0 to 25,0 microns. The synthetic fibres may comprise up to about 30 per cent by weight of the filter material and they are first opened or separated by a crushing or grinding operation in a hammer mill followed by screening and further opening on a picker and carding device while simultaneously blending the opened fibres with a portion of the larger diameter fibres, the remainder of the larger diameter fibres being added to the mixture in a second picker and carding machine. The resulting mixture is passed to a finishing carding machine from which the fibre mixture emerges in the form of a web or sliver. Alternatively the mixed fibres may be fed into an air blast which deposits them as a web on a rotating cylindrical drum. The web of mixed fibres may be compressed into a sliver and, after wrapping in a tubular wrapper, severed to form filters suitable for incorporation into a cigarette or for use in tobacco pipes or cigarette or cigar holders. A binding material may be applied to the fibres to bind the fibres together. The binder may be a thermoplastic or thermo-sensitive material such as a synthetic resin, examples of which are given, and may be applied to the fibre mixture or to the large diameter fibres only. Alternatively the binder may be a fibrous thermosensitive material and may replace part or all of either the small or large diameter fibres, the fibre mixture being heated to cause the fibres to bond together at their intersections. The sliver of mixed fibres may be strengthened by braiding with cotton thread or webs of the mixed fibres may be interleaved with crepe paper, the sliver or webs being subsequently wrapped in a tubular wrapper to form a rod in which the strengthening threads or the crepe paper run longitudinally of the rod.
