Abstract
743,976. Rubber springs; road-vehicle spring-suspensions. MOULTON, A. E. March 19, 1953 [Nov. 14, 1951], No. 26640/51. Classes 108 (2) and 108 (3). In a vehicle spring suspension including a rubber body 8 functioning in shear between inner and outer metal elements 14, 9, the rubber body 8 is bonded to the inner surface of the element 9, which is of deformable trough-like cross-section with flanges 10, 11, projecting beyond the surface of the rubber and closed by a plate member 12 extending transversely of the vehicle, wheel-supporting arms 25 being carried on the inner element or elements 14 at each end of the member 12. As applied to a trailer suspension, a stub axle 18 is bolted to the arm 25 and a beam 26. The arm 25 is bolted to a flange 28 welded to the inner element 14. The inner end of the beam 26 carried by a bolt 32 which is rigid with the element 14. The element 14 may extend to the other side of the trailer and carry a second axle 18. Where an independent suspension is needed, the element 14 and rubber body 8 are divided medially into two independent sections within a unitary outer shell 9. A bearing 21 for the inner element or elements 14 may be mounted on the shell 9. In a modification (Figs. 1 to 4, not shown), the beam 26 is dispensed with and the member 25 is of more solid construction. The axle ends of the member 25 may be connected by a dead axle. Specifications 676,098 and 676,190 are referred to.
