Abstract
742,164. Welding by fusion. MOND NICKEL CO., Ltd. Nov. 18, 1953 [Nov. 19, 1952], No. 32016/53. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XI] In gas-shielded arc welding of nickel and nickel alloys, especially those comprising 60-70 per cent nickel and 20-30 per cent copper, a stream of inert gas, e.g. helium or argon, is passed axially around the electrode and an annular laminar stream of hydrogen is directed to converge inwardly upon and envelop the inert gas stream. The inert gas is supplied from tube 36 in the handle 4 of a torch to flow through passages 38, 41 and emerge as a non-turbulent stream through a nozzle 26, having a cylindrical inner surface and a conical outer surface, arranged about a non-consumable electrode 3. Hydrogen is supplied through a tube 46 in the handle to flow down a passage 48 to an annular passage 50 and through a series of ports 51 to a reservoir 52, formed in part by a cavity in the end of the nozzle 26, where its flow is reversed and then directed down a passage 35 between the outer surface of nozzle 26 and a nozzle 32. The nozzle outlets are coplanar. The angle of the passage 35 to the axis of the electrode may be 10-30 degrees. Cooling of the torch is effected by passing water through an annular passage 20 and a current supply stud 18 is water-cooled. A sleeve 55 extends from the nozzle 32 and is spaced from the body to reduce water vapour condensation. Specification 649,888 is referred to.
