Abstract
749,457. Cooling cutting-tools. DISTILLERS CO., Ltd. May 18, 1954 [June 10, 1953], No. 15918/53. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIII] A method of cooling cutting-tools and work during turning, milling, grinding, &c. on metals, thermoplastic synthetic resins &c., comprises delivering to the cutting region carbon dioxide in the form of gas, liquid, or snow, or any combination of these, from a capillary tube supplied with liquid carbon dioxide at a pressure of at least that given by the equation where p is the pressure in pounds per square inch above atmospheric pressure and T is the absolute temperature of the carbon dioxide entering the capillary tube, substantially within the range 250 to 304 degrees absolute. A lathe tool B, Fig. 3, is drilled to enable a capillary tube D to be passed through the tool. The carbon dioxide supply line E is connected to the tube and the latter is positioned so that its orifice is just below and to the rear of the cutting-tip of the tool. A cutting-oil may also be used.
