Abstract

747,098. Turbines and compressors. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Dec. 9, 1953 [Dec. 15, 1952], No. 31798/52. Class 110(3) In an axial-flow turbine or compressor a blade-supporting part such as a rotor, is formed with two sets of shouldered slots, one set extending in the generally axial direction and the other set extending circumferentially, correspondingly-shouldered roots of the blades being engaged in the sets of slots and correspondingly-shouldered roots of filler pieces being engaged in the other set of slots. The circumferential slots open at their ends into the axial slots, and the radially-facing surfaces of the filler pieces and the root attachment portions of the blades form in the assembly a substantially continuous annular shroud surface. The turbine rotor shown is formed with generally axially-extending slots 12 of circular cross-section and with undercut circumferential slots 22. The root portions 13 of blades 14 are mounted in the axial slots being retained by shims 15 peened over at the ends and by retainer strips 16 with bifurcated bent-over ends 16a. Filler pieces 18 having shouldered roots 19 are mounted in the circumferential slots, the blade platforms 17 and the filler pieces 18 co-operating to form a complete shroud annulus. The filler pieces are recessed at 23 for lightness. The blades and filler pieces may be of ceramic or sintered material.
