Abstract

731,176. Fireproofing cellulosic materials. TITAN CO., Inc. Oct. 20, 1952 [Oct. 30, 1951; Nov. 27, 1951], No. 26285/52. Class 140. Fibrous cellulosic material is impregnated with an aqueous solution of tetravalent titanium chloride containing a phosphate dissolved therein, partially dried to form a transparent gel on the material, treated with an alkaline neutralizing agent, washed and dried. The phosphate is not necessarily water-soluble but must be soluble in the solution of titanium chloride: specified phosphates are the alkali phosphates; magnesium and calcium phosphates. The solution may contain 50 to 150 g./l. of titanium, approximately 1.3 to 2.0 parts by weight of chloride and approximately 0.02 to 0.17 parts by weight of phosphorus for each part of titanium. To improve the fire-resistance and glow-resistance, antimony trichloride in amounts up to 4 parts by weight antimony for each part of titanium may be added. Sodium carbonate and ammonium hydroxide and carbonate are specified neutralizing agents, to which soluble silicates (e.g. sodium, silicate) may be added. Such soluble silicate may be added to the cellulosic material prior to impregnation or after neutralization. Materials which may be fireproofed include cotton, linen, regenerated cellulose, viscose and cellulose acetate, kapok, hemp, wood and wood products such as pressed board, cardboard, batting, paper, wood flour and sawdust. In an example antimony trioxide is added to a solution of hydrochloric and phosphoric acids, and titanium tetrachloride added with agitation and cooling to the slurry so formed. The solution thus obtained is diluted to a titanium content of 60 g./l. and used to impregnate cotton cloth. The cloth is partially dried by exposure to the atmosphere to gelatinize the treating agent and then treated in sodium carbonate solution containing sodium silicate, washed and dried. Specification 698,742 is referred to.
