Abstract
<PICT:0735373/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0735373/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0735373/IV (a)/3> <PICT:0735373/IV (a)/4> An artificial thread is treated with liquids while travelling around a reel, formed by an assembly of rollers, in a number of helical turns which are advanced along the reel in axial direction. The various treating liquids are supplied in successive zones along the reel and, for the purpose of removing excess quantities of liquids from the rollers and minimizing intermingling of different liquids, there is provided a pair of arcuate shells with scrapers on the concave face of each of the shells, and means for removably mounting the shells between two juxtaposed rollers of the reel with the scrapers abutting the rollers and with the convex faces of the shells in juxtaposition, this mounting means including a first fastening means capable of pivotally connecting the shells together so as to permit movement of the longitudinal edges thereof towards each other, for initial insertion between the rollers, and to permit subsequent rotation of the shells in opposite directions after they are in position between the rollers, and including also a second fastening means for locking the shells against further relative rotation. The first fastening means may include juxtaposed lugs carried by the convex faces of the shells, one of the lugs having a hole into which may be inserted a pin carried by the other lug. The second fastening means may include a relatively short pin on the lug which carries the first pin, and another hole in the other lug for receiving the short pin, whereby partial insertion of the long pin into the corresponding hole will hinge the shells together with the ends of the shells out of registration with each other, and relative longitudinal movement of the shells to engage the short pin in its corresponding hole will bring the ends of the shells into registration with each other and lock the shells against relative rotation. As shown in Fig. 2, a filament or thread advancing and storing reel is formed of a plurality of rolls R, equally spaced around a fixed central support 18 and rotated at the same speed from a single central gear. The axes of the rolls R are skewed relative to the axis of the centra support 18 so that when a filament is wound about the reel it will move in a helical path. The degree of skew is adjustable. The filament or thread may proceed directly from a spinneret and coagulation bath to the liquid-treatment apparatus. It may be treated on the reel with acid or alkaline solutions, soap solutions, water or other liquids in succession as it moves longitudinally along the reel. Towards the delivery end of the reel there may be provided a drying zone. For removing excess liquids and in order to avoid intermingling of liquids delivered to adjacent zones of the reel, combined liquid scrapers and separators are provided. These comprise curved shells 41, 42. The concave surfaces of these shells are provided with longitudinal strips 47, 48, and transverse strips 50 (Fig. 3), which contact the adjacent rolls. The strips 50 are so spaced that, when they contact the respective rolls, they define zones of the desired length which register with the various liquid supply pipes P. Spouts 52 are provided to remove liquids scraped off by strip 47 on shell 42. Liquids scraped off roll 41 by strip 48 drain down the inner surface of the shell. The liquids so removed are emptied into a trough 54 (Figs. 2 and 5). This trough is divided by partitions 56 into several compartments C, and these compartments are further divided by a longitudinal wall 58 to provide small compartments F. The compartments C register with the spaces between the strips 50. The liquids may be recovered separately by running them through the drains 68. The compartments C communicate through orifices 72 with compartments F, and these communicate with each other through orifices 74 so that, if desired, any or all of the liquids may be disposed of through a common drain. As shown in Fig. 4, the convex outer surface of shell 41 is provided with lugs 80 for supporting spring rods 82 which also pass through an arcuate lug 84. The lug 84 is secured to the convex outer surface of the shell by a pin 88. Shell 42 is provided with a similar lug 84a. An upper short pin 98 and a lower long pin 100 on the lug 84a are adapted to engage holes 94, 96 in the lug 84. The shells may be held against longitudinal movement relative to the reel by causing them to abut against collars 102, 103 (Fig. 2) on rolls 39, 40 at one end and against a detachable locking plate at the other end. In the assembled position, lug 84a on shell 42 abuts and slightly bends spring rods 82, whereby the shells are biased in opposite directions into engagement with rolls 39, 40. The action of the spring ensures that the scraping and segregating strips 47, 48, 50 will contact the rolls with following pressure. Specification 686,026 is referred to.
