Abstract

722,961. Collapsible grilles. RELY-A-BELL BURGLAR & FIRE ALARM CO., Ltd. Oct. 15, 1953 [Oct. 22, 1952], No. 26553/52. Class 45. [Also in Group XXV] A protective grille comprises a number of transverse horizontally extending members in the form of wires 1 linked together by a number of relatively short vertical members 4 each of which is pivotally connected at its ends to two adjacent transverse members, the vertical members being spaced apart from each other by tubular members 2<SP>11</SP> threaded on the transverse members 1, the whole being arranged in such a manner that alternate transverse members may be brought to lie closely adjacent one another with the normally vertical members 4 lying in substantially horizontal planes when the grille is brought to its collapsed position. The end vertical members 4 are retained in position on the wires 1 by collars 2. Alternate wires are extended at each end and are provided with rollers 2<SP>1</SP>. The grille so formed is hung from a frame member 7 by links 10 and the rollers engage channels in side frame members 3. The bottom wire 1 is connected by links to a T girder 12, extensions on the ends of which are guided in the side frame members. This girder 12 is connected to cables 5 which pass over pulleys adjacent the frame member and when this girder 12 is drawn upwardly by the cables 5 the wires 1 which have no rollers move away from the frame members 3 so that alternate wires are brought together to collapse the grille. The frame member 7 may be bolted to the tops of the side frame members or may be floating, in which case it rests on stops on the side frame members. The provision of the T girder 12 permits the grille to be locked in its extended position by means of a sliding catch (see Group XXV) which engages the bottom flange of the girder.
