Abstract
720,779. Refrigerating; heat pumps for heating liquids in bulk. PATTERSON & ASSOCIATES, Inc., V. C. March 4, 1953 [March 31, 1952], No. 6001/53. Classes 29 and 64 (3). A hot water storage tank 11 is heated by a heat pump comprising a compressor 12 having high and low pressure discharges 19, 20 the former of which supplies refrigerant in series through a desuperheater coil 13 in the upper part of the tank, a high temperature condenser 14 in the middle of the tank, a pressure reducing device 23 such as a throttle valve or a capillary tube and a low temperature condenser 15 and the latter of which supplies refrigerant through a pipe 22 to the low temperature condenser 15. From condenser 15, liquid refrigerant flows through pipe 16, expansion valve 17, evaporator 10 and suction pipe 18 back to the compressor. A thermal device 24 responsive to the tank temperature controls the compressor motor and the motor of a fan 25 circulating air over the evaporator. The compressor 12 is immersed in electric-insulating oil contained in a chamber 27 let into the upper part of the tank 11 to convey the compressor waste heat to the water in the tank.
