Abstract

712,312. Rail vehicle wheels. ECK1NGTON, F. J. Oct. 19, 1951 [July 20, 1950], No. 18156/50. Class 144(1) A rail vehicle wheel has a rim 5 and wheel body 1 formed with a plurality of interfitting radial projections 6, 2 respectively, each of which is encased in a rubber or like block 7 or 3 which blocks fill the spaces between the projections 2, 6 and, on assembly of the wheel, are compressed between the inner and outer peripheries respectively of the rim and wheel body to provide driving engagement therebetween. As shown the rim 5 may have I-shaped projections 6, the ends 6B of which are flat, concave or convex-faced to co-operate with mating surfaces on the wheel body projections 2. The rubber blocks 3, 7 may each be divided along a central circumferential line into two parts to facilitate mounting and replacement. The rim 5 and blocks 3, 7 are secured against axial displacement on the body 1 by annular plates 8 bolted to each side of the wheel body and extending into recesses in the rubber blocks so that the wheel presents flush faces. In alternative constructions the I-shaped projections may be formed on the wheel body, or both sets of projections may be in the form of rectangular section teeth.
