Abstract
719,538. Surgical optical instruments. GUTTMAN, A. P. Feb. 28, 1952 [March 2, 1951], No. 5115/51. Class 81(2) A device for viewing the working surfaces of joints or the interior of body cavities comprises a telescope associated with a tubular cutting member. The telescope 1, having an eyepiece 2, is axially slidable within a tubular cutting element 4, the tip 7 of which is bevelled and sharpened. The relative axial positions of the telescope and cutter are determined by engagement of studs 10 with slots 13 in the outer member. The telescope is retracted within the cutting element while the latter is being thrust through the tissue and it is then moved forward to make the desired observation. It is also proposed to provide a further external sleeve to replace the cutting member 4 after an initial incision has been made. This has a closed, rounded end, see Fig. 7 (not shown), and a lateral aperture adjacent the end of the telescope, and the edge of this aperture is sharpened so that axial movement of the sleeve, relative to the telescope, can cut away a sample of tissue.
