Abstract
714,860. Turning; planing. FERRANTI, Ltd. Oct. 20, 1952 [Oct. 19, 1951], No. 24396/51. Class 83 (3). In a turning or planing process of the kind in which work is operated on by a single-edged cutting-tool, a method of performing the cutting operation comprises vibrating the cutting edge of the tool alternatively into a relatively greater and lesser extent of cutting engagement with said work-piece at a high audio or supersonic frequency. Apparatus for carrying out the process in a turning operation comprises.a tool 13 secured to a tapered member 15 of non-magnetic material, the base of which is brazed or welded to a magnetostrictive or other vibrator 16. As shown, this consists of a stack of ferromagnetic laminations 17 forming a transformer-like core consisting of two limbs 19, Fig. 2, joined by two yokes 20, the limbs carrying coils 22. The vibrator is secured between clamps 24 to a tool-rest 25 by means of bolts 26, the clamps are arranged at the centres of the limbs 19 where there is a vibrational antinode. The tool is vibrated during cutting in a direction 28 normal to the axis of the work 10, but the vibrator may be arranged at rightangles to the direction shown so that the tool vibrates tangentially to the point of cutting. In a further modification two vibrators arranged in the two ways referred to above may be connected at the tool-carrying ends to produce a combined movement. The frequency is chosen not to coincide with the natural resonance of the work and by this means it is stated that with slender work the work is not bowed or displaced by the cutting and accuracy of machining is improved.
