Abstract

703,777. Propelling and steering ships. PLEUGER KOMMANDIT-GES. May 10, 1951, No. 11003/51. Class 114 Means for propelling a vessel comprises a propeller 27 driven by a squirrel cage induction motor 8, 9 disposed in a casing 3 mounted exteriorly of the hull of the vessel and clean water is circulated through the pipes 30 to flood the casing and so ensure lubrication of the bearings. The water is supplied from a tank in the vessel. The hollow motor shaft 10 is connected to the propeller shaft 17 through an elastic coupling 15. A thrust bearing 20 is provided. Two or more propulsion units may be disposed at the stern of the ship or alternatively at the bow or midships. The propeller may be disposed forward or aft of the casing 3. The propulsion units may be mounted on vertical shafts which are rotatable for steering the vessel; they may also be detachably secured to the hull so as to be used as a supplementary or emergency drive. In another embodiment, Fig. 11, the propulsion unit is carried by the rudder shaft 73 and is enclosed within an annular nozzle 79. Blades 76, 77 connect the unit 72 to the nozzle and guide the water leaving the propeller 71. The unit may be secured to the ordinary rudder of a boat.
