Class 146(1) Document filing apparatus comprises vertically spaced sprockets, carrying endless chains and journalled in each of a pair of spaced vertical frame members which have a plurality of card holding trays therebetween, with lever arms secured 'to the chains at intervals and pivotally supporting the trays in spaced horizontal positions laterally outward of the chains for movement down on one side and up on the ether, the lever arms being substantially larger than the radii of the sprockets and being pivotally connected to the trays at their front ends on axes offset from the pivotal connecting axes on the rear ends of the trays. Between upright frame members 20, 21 mounted on a base 10 are journalled sprockets 42, 52 and 34, 51 for chains 50, 49, the rear sprockets 42, 52 being at a higher level than the front sprockets 34, 51 and the lower sprockets 51, 52 being adjustably mounted. A shaft 33 secured to sprocket 34 and extending to the rear frame 21, is positively driven as by a belt 47 and pulley 46 from a motor on a base extension 10<SP>1</SP> and drive is communicated to sprocket 42 by a chain drive 45 between a small sprocket 38 on shaft 33 and an outer small sprocket 42a. A hand wheel may replace the motor drive. Each tray holder comprises base 68, end walls 69, 70, narrow side walls 71 with wing flanges 72 and stiffening side flanges 73 and is mounted on pivot shafts 81, 81<SP>1</SP> by means of plates 79, 80 respectively on the lower part of front wall 69 and the upper part of rear wall 70 at a similar spacing to that of the sprockets 34, 42. The shafts 81, 81<SP>1</SP> are journalled in housing plates 84 to which are rigidly connected the ends of arms 85 of a forked lever, the other ends of arms 85 being connected to link pins at intervals along the chains 49, 50. The trays T, which are a loose fit in the tray holders, comprises a bottom 74, end walls 75 with sloping inner walls 76 and narrow side walls 77. The positions of the connecting arms 85 on the chains may be varied so as to vary the distance between holders to accommodate cards of different heights. Guides for the chains 49, 50 comprise channel members 62 having flanges 63 welded to frames 20, 21 and notched at 64, 64<SP>1</SP> and 65 to fit. the hubs of the sprockets, to which members 62 are secured inner flanges 86, 87 either side of the chains. The members 62 are connected between the chain runs by a channel plate 67. A further guide may be provided by a V-shaped track 90, Fig. 3, on the rear frame 21, in which track one roller 92 on a bracket 91 pivoted on each shaft 81<SP>1</SP> rolls at one side and a second roller 92 on the other side, transfer tracks 93 and cutaway flanges 94 being provided at bottom and top of the track. The whole structure may run on rollers 12, 16 in the base 10 and extension 10<SP>1</SP> and may be enclosed by any suitable cabinet including a top lid to be swung up or lifted out of the way to expose the top pair of trays T for working on the cards therein. The motor drive shaft 33 may be operated by a double throw switch so as to drive the tray, holders in either direction. Automatic electrical operation may be utilized by indexing the several trays and providing a push button selector for the trays which may be arranged to send the tray by the shortest distance to the top of the file.
