Abstract

In a moulding mixture comprising sand with from 2 1/2 per cent. to 12 per cent. of a finely-divided thermosetting resin binder and a hardening agent, the sand is a mixture of two or more sands from different sources and contains a sufficient proportion of large grains to give strength without causing a segregation of the binder and a sufficient proportion of small grains to give the required smoothness of surface. The sand preferably comprises equal parts of Bedford silica sand which is relatively coarse, about 75 per cent. being retained on a number 72 British Standard Sieve and "H" sand which is finer, about 88 per cent., passing a number 120 B.S. Sieve. The mixture may contain between 1 per cent. and 9 per cent. plumbago or 1 - 6 per cent. of terra-flake or mixture of plumbago and terra-flake. A preferred composition is Bedford silica sand and "H" sand, 46.75 per cent. of each; resin binder, including a hardening agent, 5 per cent.; plumbago, 1.5 per cent. A phenol resin, cresol resin or urea resin may be used but phenol formaldehyde is preferred, with hexamine as a hardening agent.
