Abstract

Hydrocarbons containing sulphur compounds are desulphurized by treatment with a gas containing 20 to 60 per cent by volume of hydrogen while they are passed in a liquid film at a temperature above 200 DEG C and pressure above 10 atmospheres over a stationary fragmentary catalyst comprising an oxygen-or sulphur-containing compound of a metal of Group VI of the Periodic System and an oxygen- or sulphur-containing compound of a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic System. The feed gas may contain nitrogen and hydrocarbons, and may suitably be gases produced by catalytic cracking, with or without additional hydrogen, or by re-forming of normally liquid or gas hydrocarbons or by the dry distillation of hydrocarbonaceous substances such as gas coal. The gases leaving the reaction zone, which have a comparatively low hydrogen content, may be discharged from the system The amount of gas leaving the system, measured at normal temperature and pressure after removal of hydrogen sulphide, should be less than 500 litres per kilogramme of hydrocarbons treated. Any carbon monoxide and unsaturated hydrocarbons in the gas should preferably be eliminated. Cobalt and molybdenum oxides or sulphides, or a cobalt salt of molybdic acid or molybdenum sulpho-acid on aluminium oxide as a carrier form suitable catalysts. The results of tests describing the desulphurization of a gas oil (boiling range 260-350 DEG C) containing 1.33 per cent sulphur using a feed gas of pure hydrogen, 40 per cent hydrogen and 60 per cent methane, 40 per cent hydrogen and 60 per cent nitrogen and 50 per cent hydrogen and 50 per cent carbon monoxide are reported. Specifications 657,400 and 665,575 are referred to.
