Abstract
698,446. Variable-speed gearing. KOWALSKI, H., and STROTER, H. Oct. 30, 1951 [Aug. 4, 1949], No. 25388/51. Class 80 (ii). In a stepless variable change speed gear having pairs of expanding pulleys 27, 28, 38, 39, 43, 44, 51, 52 connected by transmission members 34, 48, the distance of the intermediate shaft 41 from parallel driving and driven shafts 22, 58, and thus the surface pressure on the pulley faces, is varied automatically in accordance with the load of the driven shaft. As shown in Fig. 4 the pulleys 38, 39, 43, 44, are keyed to the intermediate shaft 41 mounted in arms 64, 65, pivoted on a shaft 66, and the pulleys 27, 28, 51, 52, are keyed to the driving, and driven shafts 22, 58 respectively. Whentransmitting power the intermediate shaft tends to move from the full line position, Fig. 3, towards the dotted. line position. The transmission ratio may be varied by means of a pinion and rack 69, 70, acting on a sliding bush 33 carrying, pulley halves 28, 51. The transmission members 34, 48, may be friction rings, V-belts, chains or the like. In a modification a single pair of pulleys is used and the drive is taken from the intermediate shaft 41 to a shaft coaxial with the shaft 66 by chain gearing.
