Abstract
686,297. Bolt-hole bushes. HELI-COIL CORPORATION. July 5,1951, No. 15970/51. Class 89(i) A helical wire insert to form a screw head in a hole in a material of low tensile strength is shaped so that the exterior also forms a thread with one face 8 at an angle between fifteen and thirty degrees to the axis and the other substantially normal thereto. The coil is wound with the leading end 17 slightly smaller than the hole into which it is to be inserted, axial pressure then causing the larger diameter turns to contract. When the coil is in place it is expanded to embed the edge 9 into the wall 20 of the hole either by a tool or by the bolt. The edge 9 may be interrupted, to form teeth in one or more turns, by forming notches 20 with symmetrical flanks. Notches of other forms are illustrated, and the notches may be replaced by a pair of opposed plates. The wire may be of the section shown on Fig. 9 the double incline 34, 35 permitting assembly, in a through hole, from either side.
