Abstract
A fibre-forming mass in a thick or semi-solid state is applied to a support and is subjected to the picking-up and extending action of the tips or points of a finely pointed rotating member which by its rotation is periodically brought into contact with the support and withdrawn therefrom to produce artificial fibres of comparatively <PICT:0685911/IV (a)/1> short length. The finely-pointed rotation member (or "gib") may be formed as a comb or brush. Fibre may be produced from glass, polyamides, polyacrylates, polystyrenes, polyvinylchloride and cellulose esters. If desired, the process may be carried out in a non-oxidizing medium, e.g. nitrogen or carbon dioxide. As shown, the semi-solid fibre-forming mass is fed from a container 1 to a spreading plate 2 and thence to a roller 3 on which it is spread in a uniform layer. Another cylinder 4 revolves on an axis 5 parallel to that of cylinder 3. A comb 6 is mounted on a frame 7 provided with counterweights, the frame 7 being mounted for independent rotation on the axis 5 of the cylinder 4. Preferably the comb rotates at a slower velocity than the cylinder 4, thus stretching the fibres. The points of the comb strike the surface of the roller 3 during rotation and draw the material into fibres, which are deposited on roller 4 during further rotation of the comb. If desired, the fibres may be entrained from the points of the comb by a current of air and deposited on an endless belt. A steel wire brush may be used instead of the comb.
