Abstract

675,884. Gaseous mixtures. PILZ, K., and JOKLIK, A. Dec. 20, 1949 [Sept. 23, 1948], No. 32648/49. Class 55 (ii). A town's gas with a low carbon monoxide content is obtained from natural gas, coal gas, or mixtures, by submitting a portion to cracking in the presence of oxidation gases, then converting the bulk of the carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and increasing the hydrogen content by passage with steam over catalysts, and finally mixing with untreated gas. Natural gas containing about 97 per cent methane is passed with air over copper oxide catalyst at 800-900‹ C., the product gases being cooled by a water spray to 300-400‹ C. and after reacting with the steam in a converter, being cooled, washed and mixed with fresh natural gas to provide a mixture of CH 4 34.2 per cent, H 2 26.9 per cent, CO 1.8 per cent, CO 2 9.4 per cent, N 2 27.7 per cent. In a coal gas treating plant comprising a cracking oven 3, converter 5, and spray cooler 4, heat exchangers 8, 9 are interposed for preheating the oxidation gas and the gas before conversion. The portion of the gas not subjected to cracking rejoins the cracked stream before the saturator 4 apart from a small amount burnt in the converter with air admitted through an inlet 11. The product gas may consist of CH 4 21.6 per cent, H 2 52.0 per cent, CnH 4 2.2 per cent, CO 1.0 per cent, CO 2 9.1 per cent, N 2 14.1 per cent.
