664,763. Supersonic inspection devices. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 12, 1950. [Feb. 17, 1949] No. 4407/49. Class 118 (ii). An electro-mechanical transducer for selectively transmitting compressional or shear supersonic waves into a medium under test comprises two interlaced lines or two-dimensional arrays of transducer elements mounted on the surface of the medium, the two arrays being selectively operable and being adapted to transmit compressional and shear waves respectively. The inter-element spacing and relative phase of energisation for the two arrays are such that a beam of shear waves may be produced at any desired angle greater than 45 degrees to the normal to the surface and a beam of compressional waves may be produced at any desired angle less than 45 degrees to the normal. The relative phase of energisation may be varied continuously or in steps.
