Abstract

A foam-inhibiting composition comprises a fine dispersion in a water-immiscible organic liquid of one or more organic compounds containing in the molecule at least two groups of the general formula RCONR1-, wherein R equals an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical of at least 10 carbon atoms and R1 equals hydrogen or an organic radical, the groups being either joined directly or through a polyvalent organic radical. Suitable organic compounds, which may contain substituent groups such as amino, hydroxyl, ester and ether groups, are di- and poly-acylated polyalkylene polyamines, the acyl groups being derived from lauric, palmitic, oleic, stearic and ricinoleic acids or naphthenic acids obtained from the refining of petroleum and suitable polyamines being ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, hexamethylene diamine, decamethylene diamine, hydroxyethyl ethylene diamine and 1 : 3 - diamino - 2 - propanol. Specified compounds are N,N1-distearyl ethylene diamide, N,N1-dioleyl hexamethylene diamide, N,N1-dilauryl decamethylene diamide, N,N1-dinaphthenyl ethylene diamide, tristearyl diethylene triamide, the palmityl ester of N,N1-dipalmityl-N1b -hydroxyethyl ethylene diamide and the lauryl ester of 1 : 3-di-(laurylamido)-2-propanol. Specified organic liquids are white spirit, kerosene, spindle oil, light and heavy lubricating oils, fuel oils, higher alcohols, ketones, esters and halogenated hydrocarbons. The compositions may be added to the media in which foaming is to be inhibited in the form of an aqueous emulsion, preferably of the "water-in-oil" type, emulsifying agents being added for the purpose. The compositions inhibit foaming in aqueous and non-aqueous media, several examples of which are given.
