Abstract
656,463. Piston packing. SOC. ANON. ALLIANCE EUROPEENNE. Dec. 22, 1947, No. 33847. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1946. [Class 122(i)] In a packing arrangement for combustion engine pistons in which two split piston - rings, urged axially and radially apart by spring means, are lodged in a channel formed in a U-section annular carrier adapted to slide radially in an annular groove of a piston provided with means enabling the carrier to be placed in position, the carrier comprises a pair of flat annuli 4, 5, each having an inner flange 6 extending over slightly less than 180 degrees so that when the two annuli are assembled to form the annular carrier the flange 6 of either annulus is diametrically opposite the flange of the other annulus and engages the non- flanged sector of such other annulus, the carrier being prevented from rotating in the piston groove 2 and each piston ring 8, 9 being prevented from rotating in the carrier, while further spring means 14 interposed between the bottom of the piston groove and the adjacent face of the flange of either annulus urge the annuli and corresponding piston rings diametrically apart. Two frusto-conical split spring rings 11 made from thin sheet steel are interposed, with their inner peripheries adjacent between the piston rings 8, 9, and urge them axially and radially apart. Each of the two springs 14 carries a pin 15 at its mid-point which passes through a hole 16 in the flange 6 of the corresponding annulus and engages in the gaps of the piston rings 8, 9, to prevent them from rotating in the carrier which is prevented from rotating in the piston groove 2 by two pins 12 secured in the bottom of the groove and engaging between the edges 13 of the flange 6 of the annuli 4, 5. The spring rings 11 fit in recesses in the inner faces of the piston rings 8, 9, and have a flat washer 21 between them to prevent the taper of either spring ring from reversing. The annuli 4, 5 are preferably made of hard light-weight metal.
