Abstract
A graphitizible alloy steel has the following composition C 1.0-2.0 per cent, Mn 0.2 -1.0 per cent, A1 0.5-2.5 per cent, Si 0.5-1.75 per cent, Cr 0.2-1.0 per cent, Fe, with the usual impurities, the remainder. The alloy may also contain one or more of the following elements: V 0.1-0.3 per cent, Zr up to 0.5 per cent, Nb up to 0.3 per cent and Cu 0.25-1.5 per cent. The steels are graphitized by heating to above the AC3 point for sufficient time to produce an austenitic structure, cooling rapidly to room temperature and heating to a temperature near to but below the Ac point for sufficient time to graphitize the steel leaving 0.2-0.8 per cent of combined carbon. The steel so treated may be nitrided by heating in contact with a nitrogen-liberating agent for sufficient time to produce a nitride case of the desired depth.
